Finding New Friends in Recovery

Recovery is the time that comes after entering treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction. It’s the start of a completely new life style. Each time a person enters in to recovery it’s suggested that they make several changes in their lifestyle. One of the most significant changes suggested would be to change the places and people that were a part of their drinking and using habits.

This is simply not to state that once you enter recovery you’ve to find brand new friends. Quite often addicts and alcoholics have friends that have stood by them through thick and thin. It’s the friends that drank and used drugs using the newly recovering individual that are the problem. For the most part, from the time some body stops the cycle of alcohol or drug abuse, the only real people they associate with are those who are using.

Discovering new friends in recovery begins when you decide to quit the dependency and acknowledge that there’s a challenge and enter therapy. Initially, you are surrounded by people who are in treatment with you along with consultants or medical experts. As you start to be involved in your recovery and sober up you will make friends that have exactly the same goals as you. After treatment, as you begin aftercare, you’ll develop friendships that may last a very long time. Some body once explained that buddies in recovery are like people in your lifeboat from the Titanic, as you are surviving something that’s life threatening.

It’s always useful to have people in your life that understand what you are going through. In recovery it means even more. You’re with people who have a common problem and a common solution. You gain the benefit of others’ experiences and they get the benefit of yours.

More frequently than not, finding new friends in recovery is something which happens naturally. Many individuals find friends in recovery through plans and other such organizations. A lot of people find friends through various recovery programs because they share this kind of personal relationship and help each other in something which is indeed personal.

Relationships and their value are often overlooked in modern society as a lot of people are primarily centered on romantic love. However, friendship is a thing that can help us to and to grow, and it can be hugely beneficial on your way of recovery.
